Volunteer Programs
Who We are and What we do
Communities@Work is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We are a large community organisation that provides services to more than 10,000 people annually, utilising a paid workforce in excess of 400, over 200 volunteer staff along with 150 self employed family day care educators.
Operating for nearly 35 years in the ACT, Communities@Work programs and staff are committed to delivering quality community services of social value and practical benefit. We work towards the development of strong and socially inclusive communities that care for the wellbeing of all.
Our programs include childcare and foster care, parenting and family support, youth programs, educational programs, transition housing, respite, disability services as well as transport, in home support and social activities for seniors.
Current Opportunities
After School Care - Assistant
Our after school care programs operate during school terms from 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm daily. Each program differs in its operation by the nature of the environment and the number of children and staff. We provide the children with a nutritious afternoon tea each day and offer a range of games and activities to extend their leisure and social opportunities.
Role: We are looking for volunteers to help engage children in different activities which expand their knowledge and skills base. All to be done in a fun and engaging way.
Volunteer Profile: Strong communication skills and a passion for working with children. Individuals or groups with skills in art and craft, woodwork, sports and games are desirable.
Times: From 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm daily.
Centre4Seniors - Program Assistant The centre offers a large range of programs targeted at seniors in and around Weston Creek and Tuggeranong. The centre aims to engage seniors through social and active programs.
Role: We are looking for volunteers to help with the general running of the program and activities. Volunteer Profile: Strong communication skills and a positive disposition. Volunteers need to exhibit a good work ethic and a desire to have fun with the various activities. Times: Vary through the week.
Connections@Cooleman - program assistant An activities based leisure and living skills program designed for adults with disabilities aged between 25 and 40 years living in the Tuggeranong or Weston Creek regions.
Role: We are looking for volunteers to help with the general running of the program and activities. Volunteer Profile: Individuals with high social and interpersonal skills who can communicate in a positive way to a group with a wide range of disabilities. We are especially looking for young males to help out, particularly on Wednesdays with our music games and activities. Times: - Monday Mornings: Excursions and Drop in Centre (games, computer, gardening) - Tuesday Mornings: Art, Craft and Cooking - Wednesdays: Movement and Music
Community Hubs - Community Advisors
The hubs are designed to provide flyers/information on a wide range of services which are available in the local area. The hubs also provide an opportunity to capture information about any perceived unmet needs or gaps in services.
Role: Volunteers are required to assist with the set up of the Hub and to link the community with local services/programs by providing flyers and information. Volunteer Profile: Individuals with high social and interpersonal skills who can communicate in a positive way. They need to be good listeners and have a good understanding of their role to provide information, not advice. Times: Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Energy Outreach Program - Educator The EOP is funded by the ACT Government and is a practical approach to assisting those experiencing financial hardship. Households may be eligible to receive replacement of old inefficient white goods with new more energy efficient models, home energy education and home energy assessments & retrofits.
Role: Volunteers are needed to assist the Energy Outreach Officer with admin support and home visits. Volunteer Profile: Strong communication skills and a passion in environmental conservation. Individuals studying or working in the environmental sector are urged to apply. Times: Times and dates will occur during the week and are subject to volunteer availability and the client base.
Family Day Care - Administration Star Provides a safe, secure and stimulating home environment for children, with care being provided for small groups in an approved Educator's own home. The Family Day Care Educators are trained, resourced and provided with up-to-date, information on child care practices by a qualified team of Child Development Officers.
Role: To assist our Family Day Care team through: Organising files and general admin duties Volunteer Profile: We are looking for volunteers with a positive personality and a keen eye for helping out in the community. Previous skills in administration is desirable. Times: One day a week
Home and Community Care (HACC) - Driver, Friendship Visitor, Shopping Assistant
HACC is for the frail aged and people with disabilities who need support services to help them live comfortably in their own homes. Services that are provided include: housework, shopping, showering and getting dressed, transport to social activities, and medical appointments.
Driver Role: To help transport our clients to and from their homes to medical and social appointments. Volunteer Profile: We are looking for volunteers with a high level of social skills and who possess a current and valid driver's license. Times: Any time from Monday - Friday (including some weekends)
Friendship Visitor Role: To visit our clients in their homes and have a chat over a cup of tea. Volunteer Profile: We are looking for volunteers who have a nice, relaxed personality and love a chat. Individuals who have positive and warm personalities. Times: Any time from Monday - Friday
Shopping Assistant Role: To take our clients to the shops and help them with their weekly shopping. Volunteer Profile: Volunteers will have good social skills, the ability to help carry bags and a current driver's license. Times: Any time from Monday - Friday
Gardening and Maintenance - general pool Our current maintenance team needs assistance in looking after the general wellbeing of the environments around our programs.
Role: To assist the maintenance team in their duties around the programs. Includes helping set up for events, maintaining gardens etc. Volunteer Profile: We are looking for volunteers who are hard working and love to do odd jobs at different locations. Times: Any time throughout the week.
Memory Lane - Program Assistant
Memory Lane is a centre-based day care activity held at the Centre4Seniors. It is an activity for people with early dementia and focuses on participants' strengths and promotes independence in daily living in a home-like environment.
Role: We are seeking volunteers to help with the general running of the program and activities. Volunteer Profile: We are looking for volunteers who have strong communication skills and a positive disposition. Volunteers need to have considerable patience and a desire to have fun. Times: Mondays 9.00am--1.00pm.
OzHarvest OzHarvest Canberra is a charity that rescues excess food which would otherwise be discarded. The food is distributed to charities supporting the vulnerable in Canberra, Queanbeyan and Yass.
Drivers & Passengers: Role: Drivers and Passengers are needed for the OzHarvest vans. The role is to collect, weigh and record food from donors and then deliver this food to charities and programs. Volunteer Profile: We are looking for fit and strong volunteers with a current driver's license who are willing and able to collect and distribute large amounts of food. Volunteers must exhibit solid interpersonal skills and a strong work ethic. Times: Rostered times throughout the week/month, organised by the OzHarvest Canberra Program Coordinators.
Events: Role: Attend promotional and fundraising events and assist with collecting donations, distributing information, balloons and pamphlets and escorting "Harvey" the OzHarvest mascot. Volunteer Profile: We are looking for positive and highly enthused promotional volunteers who can display great energy when working at different events. Times: Depends on the event calendar (Organised by OzHarvest Canberra Program Coordinators)
HQ Support: Role: Various roles including general administration, stocking the pantry and maintenance. Volunteer Profile Times various
Social Sing-Along - Program Assistant Social Singalong meets every fortnight at the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Club to enjoy lunch, bingo, singing, guest speakers and to socialise.
Role: We are looking for volunteers to help with the general running of the program and activities. Volunteer Profile: We are looking for volunteers who enjoy working with seniors and aren't afraid to get involved in a song. Times: The group meets fortnightly on Mondays between 12.00 -- 3.00 pm at the Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong.
SuperGrands - Mentors
SuperGrands is a specialised mentoring program made possible by dedicated volunteers offering one-on-one home mentoring and group coaching. Supergrands offer mentoring services to families and single parents assisting them in developing practical household management skills.
Role: To provide mentoring and education to families who are in need of guidance and support.
Volunteer Profile: Must exhibit strong communication skills and have the ability to help teach our clients an effective way to maintain a positive and healthy household. A genuine desire to make a difference to the lives of young families in the ACT and a willingness to work with families facing challenges. A 6 month commitment is required.
Times: Monday - Fridays with weekends negotiable
