Alzheimer's Australia ACT
Family Carers Information Session: The Impact Of Dementia
10am - 12pm
159 Maribyrnong Ave, Kaleen
Alzheimer's Australia ACT offer a free Information Session for family members and friends caring for a person with dementia.
The journey of dementia is unique for every person who has dementia, and for every person caring for someone with dementia. Sometimes, the impact of that journey isn't obvious, and we can find ourselves feeling out of our depth in being able to understand what is happening and why, and what we can do about the often tumultuous changes that are happening within ourselves and within our relationships with one another.
These are the issues that we'll be chatting about during the two hours of this session. There'll be plenty of opportunities for participants to share their particular concerns, should they wish to, and for us to work toward some positive solution.
RSVP by 9 August 2010 Please phone 6255 0722
Morning Tea will be provided
If you require Respite Care to attend this session, please contact the ACT Carer Respite Centre on

Canberra Skeptics Inc. and the Australian National University College of Medicine, Biology and Environment Present:
An ANU Public Lecture: Issues which Divide Skeptics
6pm - 7.30pm
Lecture Theatre 2, Manning Clark Centre, Union Court, Australian National University
Dr Martin Bridgstock, Griffith University
Belief in the paranormal, according to a wide range of polls and measures, hovers at about 80% of the Australian population. The Australian skeptics are a small network of people who keep demanding evidence for paranormal beliefs. They test dowsers and psychics, criticise creationists and expose quackery in alternative medicine.
Despite all this activity, skeptics disagree on some fairly fundamental issues. What is the link between skepticism and atheism, if any ? What should skeptics think about human-induced climate change ? Should there be a national organisation, to which all Australian skeptics can belong ? These are questions about which skeptics disagree sharply, and sometimes angrily.
In this talk, for the first time, a prominent skeptic tackles all of these issues head-on.
The aim will not be to push a particular viewpoint, but to open the issues up for profitable thinking and discussion. By the end of the talk, you will know what the speaker things about the issues, and why, but you will also have the chance to articulate your own views.
Dr Martin Bridgstock, a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University, has been associated with the skeptical movement for more than 25 years. He runs the highly successful course Skepticism, Science and the Paranormal, which has won several teaching prizes. He is a former joint Australian Skeptic of the year, a consultant to CSI, and has also won the Australian Skeptics’ Prize for Critical Thinking. His skeptical book Beyond Belief was published by Cambridge University Press last year.
Dinner will follow the lecture (venue tbc). To RSVP for the dinner please Email
This event was made possible by a grant from the National Science Week.
