What is the Disability Discrimination Legal Service?

The Disability Discrimination Legal Service, provides advice to people with disabilities and their associates, about their legal rights, under disability discrimination law.

Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) and the Discrimination Act 1991 (ACT), it is unlawful to discriminate against a person on the basis of disability, or on the basis of a disability of one of your associates.

If you think you have experienced discrimination on the basis of disability, the Disability Discrimination Legal Service may be able to advise you.

What services are offered?

The Disability Discrimination Legal Service, provides telephone advice to individuals on (02) 6247 2018. The Advice Line is open on Tuesdays between 9:30am and 1:00pm, and on Thursdays from 2:30pm until 4:30pm. TTY access is available on the same number (please stay on the line while we hook up). Alternative arrangements can be made for individuals who cannot use the telephone service - to make arrangements write, fax, email or have a friend call the Centre to discuss your needs (see contact details below).

We also offer some case work assistance, subject to our casework criteria. Priority is given to cases which have an element of public interest.

What if I have a client who may have experienced discrimination?

We need to speak to the affected person directly, but we are happy to take calls from advocates who have the client present at the time the call is made. Ideally, the call should be made with a speaker phone, so you can both hear the advice. If you have any questions, feel free to call the service to discuss the matter.
