The Welfare Rights and Legal Centre is a free community legal service for low income earners in the Australian Capital Territory and its region.


The Centre gives practical help so you can exercise your legal rights.

What Else Does the Centre Do?


The Centre conducts research, and makes submissions, for the reform

of laws or government policies and legislation, affecting low income earners and Centrelink clients.


The Centre provides workshops and community education programs for community groups, in areas such as social security, public housing, tenancy, and disability discrimination.


The Centre produces publications and Information Kits on specific topics of concern to low income earners.

Entering a lease for a residential tenancy in the ACT, can involve substantial financial responsibilities.

For telephone advice and assistance on your public tenancy problem, call 6247 2177, Monday to Friday between 9.30 am and 1pm, and on Monday between 2pm and 4pm.


Volunteers


The Night Time Legal Advice Service ("NTLAS"), which runs every Tuesday night from 6pm - 8pm, is run by volunteer solicitors and law students.    The Service is supervised by a solicitor employed by the WR&LC, and is coordinated by the daytime service.


The Night Time Legal Advice Service, offers one-off advice and referral, in all areas of law, and includes the Community Advice Program, which offers advice to employees about their rights.


Before volunteering for the service, every volunteer must participate in an Induction Session at the Welfare Rights & Legal Centre.


NOTE:    No advice is provided to Landlords or employers, where the rights of tenants and employees may be at stake.
